Sam Hundley: Pick Up Artist

July 31 - November 1, 2014
It doesn't take much time looking at the work of artist Sam Hundley to understand that this man is having a love affair. The artist simply adores junk and the rejected debris left behind when function is gone from an object. The patina built up on abandoned scarp metal left outside to decay holds an artless beauty for him. In the elegant curve of a rusted fan or the visual cacophony of an old spring, Hundley sees form, shape, pattern and motifs. He scans sidewalks and roadsides, always keeping an eye out for a bit of scrap that calls out like a siren to him. He gathers them and gives them a home in his studio until inspiration arrives. He fastens the metal pieces together into his sculptures…

Gestalt: Whole to the Part

May 29 - August 17, 2014
For one week in May, MOCA’s artist-in-residence, Steve Prince collaborated with community individuals through a series of workshops toward a common goal: creating a thirty-foot woodblock print titled, Gestalt: The Whole to the Part.  Over 150 participants of all ages worked under Prince’s guidance on both the design and printmaking process. The final woodcut was printed with an industrial steamroller for the public to witness, then assembled and printed to form a collective print exhibition centered on the Hampton Roads community. Sincere thanks to Steve Prince and all the workshop participants for their assistance in realizing this exhibition. Artist Steve Prince's one week residency w…

The concept of making multiple images from the same matrix has been integral to printmaking ever since the earliest prints were pulled from woodblocks and metal plates in the fifteenth century. E ach impression is an original work of art. Many of the artists in this exhibition have expanded the idea of multiplicity beyond editions of identical impressions by creating series, sequences, and images that comprise numerous parts. They explore repetition, pairing, and variations o…
