Sam Hundley: Pick Up Artist

July 31 - November 1, 2014
samhundley.com/

It doesn't take much time looking at the work of artist Sam Hundley to understand that this man is having a love affair. The artist simply adores junk and the rejected debris left behind when function is gone from an object. The patina built up on abandoned scarp metal left outside to decay holds an artless beauty for him. In the elegant curve of a rusted fan or the visual cacophony of an old spring, Hundley sees form, shape, pattern and motifs. He scans sidewalks and roadsides, always keeping an eye out for a bit of scrap that calls out like a siren to him. He gathers them and gives them a home in his studio until inspiration arrives. He fastens the metal pieces together into his sculptures. No longer garbage, they now live to tell a new story.

SATELLITE GALLERY

Open Monday-Friday 9am-6pm and Saturday from 10am-4pm. There is no charge for admission. MOCA has partnered with The Runnymede Corporation to open a permanent satellite gallery in the lobby of their Virginia Beach headquarters at 600 22nd Street, Pavilion II, a short walk from the museum.
