Magna Carta & Four Foundations of Freedom

March 30-June 18, 2007
In celebration of First Landing in April 1607, MOCA exhibited the Lincoln Cathedral Magna Carta, the founding document of free democracy and the American legal and governmental system that it underpins. Magna Carta & Four Foundations of Freedom was an exhibition exploring the relevance of five key historical documents to contemporary civil liberties. They represent touchstones of freedom, each building upon the next protect the rights of the people. MOCA presents them as a whole so that visitors can trace these freedoms to contemporary society. New Waves 2007: By Our Heirs Forever

March 30-June 18, 2007
"By Our Heirs Forever" was a thematic, juried exhibition of contemporary Virginia artists working in all visual arts media. It was shown alongside Magna Carta & Four Foundations of Freedom. All of the works in the exhibition illuminate moments in history when individual rights and freedom were extended to include an ever-expanding citizenry. The exhibition included the 1215 Lincoln Cathedral exemplar of Magna Carta, a Dunlap broadside of the Declaration of Independence, James Wilson’s original draft of the U.S. Constitution, a Lincoln-signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation, and artifacts from the Civil Rights and Women’s Suffrage movements. Dennis Winston: No Victory Without Labor

January 15–March 11, 2007
Driven by needs both social and aesthetic, Winston’s work reflects urban and rural experiences. The themes are universal and are concerned with the everyday reality of all human existence. Using woodcuts, the bold, direct, black and white renderings depict the lives of his subjects.  His images capture the moments in the lives of ordinary people and reveal something of their character, the history that shaped them, and the spirit that sustains them. His images focus on the human condition and life experiences through figurative and genre representations that are universal to all people and reflect the opportunity to give existence and personal meaning to what might otherwise go unrecorded…
