The Virginian-Pilot has been featuring film critic, Mal Vincent, and his predictions for the top categories of the Academy Awards since 1967. The result is a satiric, often fun-seeking, chronicle of the movies’ top award as predicted locally - and one that is eagerly awaited by movie fans each year.  With a success rate of 80%, it is no wonder that in 1981 he won a national prize as the critic with the most correct predictions—a fact which has only improved with time as made evident in 2004 and 2015 when Mal correctly predicted all six top categories.

Each year, Virginian-Pilot artists and photographers create an image of Mal to accompany his predictions. In 1988 the series won a national Associated Press Award for “Best Staged Photograph among all newspapers in the U. S. for “The Envelope,” an illustration featuring Mal climbing out of an Oscar envelope. In recent years, digital effects have allowed these artists to create a satirical version of the “Best Picture” pick starring the colorful critic himself.

The artists include Steve McKnackon and Sam Hundley. The photographers include Ross Taylor, Hyunsoo Leo Kim, Stacy Addison, L. Todd Spencer, Genevieve Ross, Vicki Cronis-Nohe, Martin Smith-Rodden, Bill Tiernan, Beth Bergman, Motoya Nakamura, Bethany Bickley, Lawrence Jackson, Denis Finley, D. Kevin Elliott and Robin Layton.
