Jean-Pierre Roy invites viewers to step into imagined worlds where the fate of humanity hangs in the balance. Roy's sweeping landscapes do not refer to a specific time or place, and yet, they seem strangely familiar and unsettling. We have all witnessed the great powers of destruction that can be unleashed on this earth, both natural and manmade. Earthquakes and tornadoes obliterate towns and cities, thousands of gallons of oil spill into our oceans and nuclear crises affect our air and food supplies half-way across the globe. The monuments of man crumble and disappear as a new world order is unfolding. On some level we understand that, for better or worse, our world is changing. The impact man has made on every corner of the globe has consequences. Jean-Pierre Roy acknowledges and embraces this change on many different levels. We stand witness to his complex systems and communities that are possibly on the verge of complete failure. We wonder if they are just the fantastic imaginations of a creative mind, or a portent of our future.
