Gene Koss, a New Orleans-based artist and Tulane University professor, creates glass and metal structures that obliterate any preconceived notions of the ethereal delicacy that is sometimes attributed to glass art. Instead, his sculptures are firmly rooted to the earth, reminiscent of rural agricultural communities where threshers, mowers and silos still dot the landscape. His work combines heavy industrial steel with cast glass that results in clean formal lines in conjunction with sharp edges. The play of light and color within in the glass elements of the sculptures render them luminescent as they reflect and refract energy. Graceful and seemingly miraculous, the transformation of silica particles to glass has been married with metal to create a dynamic conversation, inviting viewers to share in the discussion.
