Brian Dettmer: Elemental

May 30-August 18, 2013
Brian Dettmer is an internationally renowned sculptor who uses outdated, mass-produced books as the medium for his craft.  The artist carefully slices through books such as old encyclopedias and medical guides, revealing words, patterns and images. Individual ideas and thoughts are separated from their original context and rejoined to allow them new possibilities of meaning. What is left behind is a stunning, visual prose. Dettmer has exhibited at institutions world-wide, such as Museum of Arts and Design (New York), Museum of Contemporary Art (Georgia), Museum Rijswiijh (Netherlands) and Wellcome Collection (England). Wade Mickley: Terribly Wonderful

May 30 - August 18, 2013
Wade Mickley draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including comics, books, magazines, the internet, the news and friendships with other artists. Many of the works shown here are called “assemblage,” which is a 3-D composition constructed from found or gathered objects. Mickley’s sculptures reference folk or “outsider” art and feature materials that have a rough or weathered look. In addition to shaped and painted wood, there are broken roof tiles, vinyl records, rusted bits of metal, and signs. Wade Mickley is a Hampton Roads native who currently lives in Newport News.  Read more about this exhibit in MOCA's Gallery Guide.  MEDIA:  AltDaily Magazine Daily Press AUDIO S…
