Shifting Gaze: A Reconstruction of the Black & Hispanic Body in Contemporary Art From the Collection of Dr. Robert B. Feldman

March 21 – January 3, 2021
Shifting Gaze: A Reconstruction of The Black & Hispanic Body in Contemporary Art presents a selection of works from Dr. Robert B. Feldman’s extensive collection of contemporary art. The 27 internationally regarded artists featured here create timely considerations into race and identity. The works are inspired by global art history, American history, and popular culture and present a broad range of concepts including vulnerability, beauty, and belonging. They challenge perceptions about the way society and each of us may or may not look at the “other.”  Through various media, such as painting, sculpture, drawing, and collage, the Black, Hispanic and Latinx body is subtly implied i…

CineSpace: Selections from the Houston Cinema Arts Society Film Competition

September 21, 2019 - February 16, 2020
CineSpace is a collaboration between NASA and Houston Cinema Arts Society that offers filmmakers around the world a chance to share their works inspired by, and using, actual NASA imagery. Filmmakers are asked to make a short film, of 10 minutes or less in duration, that contains at least 10% footage from the NASA archives. The films are screened during the Houston Cinema Arts Festival, at film festivals across the country, as well as on NASA TV and even on the International Space Station. MOCA celebrates CineSpace’s fifth year of the competition by showing a curated selection of films from the past four years.  NASA's journeys into air and space continue to inspire future generations. Opening Reception: Friday, June 21, 5-7pm, free admission MOCA Satellite Gallery at 600 22nd Street, Pavilion II There are people in every community who hear a call. They possess an innate desire to be part of something greater than themselves and to serve their community. There are countless directions one can go to answer that call, but for many in our region, military service provided that path. Everyone's experience in military service is different. Time spent on active duty can be spent learning, broadening horizons, and finding clarity. It can also be one of challenges and hardship for both the service member and their families. Frequently, when veterans leave the military, they know w…

Echard Wheeler: In Stillness

September 21, 2019 - February 16, 2020
Opening Reception: Friday, September 20, 6:30 pm. Sometimes, if we are very lucky, we find home. This is not always the place you live, but it is the place where you find solace, a place that your heart recognizes. For photographer Echard Wheeler, that place is First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach.  At one time maritime forests covered much of the East Coast and almost all of Virginia Beach. Now, they are rare and endangered. First Landing may be the only place available in the region to get a sense of the area in prehistoric times. Echard Wheeler craves this connection. He travels deep into the park, walking miles to discover the life and beauty within.  The land has borne witness …

Charged

September 21, 2019 - February 16, 2020
Opening Reception: Friday, September 20, 6:30 pm. "You cannot define electricity. The same can be said of art. It is a kind of inner current in a human being, or something which needs no definition."  ~Marcel Duchamp What happens to art in an age where technology is outpacing our humanity? Technological breakthroughs are happening at an ever-increasing rate. New ways to communicate thoughts and ideas abound.  We can reach out, connect and pass along information faster than was ever thought possible. But often, these pathways encourage anonymity and open opportunities for snark, sarcasm, threats and judgement. We lose a bit of our goodwill, and our generosity. We become less than what we w…
